WSNA is a major stakeholder in environmental health policy development and is recognized
as a national leader in developing nurses as environmental health activists.
Over the last two years, WSNA has partnered with an array of stakeholders including
Toxic Free Legacy Coalition members, the Department of Ecology, the Department of
Health, the Hanford Advisory Board and other environmental health advocacy organizations.
Together, we have worked tirelessly to reduce persistent, bioaccumulating toxins
in Washington State through legislation, policy development, research development
and education.
In addition to our advocacy work, WSNA has been a leader in educating Washington’s
own nursing work force about environmental health and how we, as health care providers,
have an important role in reducing toxins in our environment. Through special environmental
health sessions during Nurse Legislative Day, informative articles in the Washington
Nurse, regular environmental health website updates, outreach into nursing schools
and opportunities for nurses to get involved in the issues, WSNA has become recognized
as a national leader in developing nurses as environmental health activists.
Washington has been a leader in promoting environmental health and safety with some
of the strongest and most proactive legislation in the country in reducing the toxins
that end up in our environment and in our bodies. Many of these chemicals have the
potential to affect our children’s health and development for generations
to come and WSNA will continue to be a strong advocate for a healthy tomorrow.
