On May 12, 2009, your local unit officers serving on Conference Committee were asked by administrative attendees Angela Beaudry and Pam Corliss to consider withdrawing our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding Extended Illness Time. We were also asked to bring forth any suggestions we might have to help save money as the hospital (along with every hospital in the State of WA) is facing possible cut backs for reimbursement in the next year. We agreed to meet with them again on May 19, 2009, along with Shelia Lehming. At that time we told them we were not willing to negotiate amending the MOU as it is part of the bargaining agreement. As many of you are aware, a year ago the hospital came to us wanting to amend article 11.2. This agreement was memorialized in a MOU after the terms were voted on by the bargaining unit. We did not believe our nurses would be interested in taking a step backwards by withdrawing any portion of this MOU. The MOU was not a temporary agreement. During the life of a contract we do not have any obligation to amend terms of the contract. However, we did make some cost saving suggestions that the hospital was not interested in considering.
Recently there are a memo sent out to all employees at Yakima Regional Medical Center from the hospital’s CEO, Monte Bostwick. Monte was not present during either the Conference Committee Meeting or the subsequent meeting.
If you have any questions regarding this or any other matter, please feel free to contact any of your local unit officers or contact you WSNA nurse Rep at 206-575-7979 ext 3113 or via email at cgarrison@wsna.org.

The issue of meal and rest breaks has plagued nurse for many years. It has never been about nurses not wanting to take their breaks. It is about real concerns related to staffing and the ability to provide SAFE Patient Care. It is about hospitals having enough STAFF to meet the requirements of the law to provide rest breaks.
Missed meal and rest breaks have a direct relationship to short staffing which can lead to unsafe patient care. Missed meal and rest breaks are a direct result of the lack of commitment to provide adequate staffing. Missed meal and rest breaks force you to work exhausted and lead to increased medical and medication errors, thus putting both Your Patients - and YOU - in jeopardy.
We don’t think it is unreasonable to expect to be able to stop and rest for 15 minutes every 4 hours … do you?
