Types of Hazards

  • Mercury
An element with many uses, but which becomes a toxic pollutant in a variety of ways.
  • Dioxins
A family of highly toxic chemicals in our environment - in our air, water, soil, and food supply - as well as our bodies.
  • Pesticides
Chemicals that are formulated to kill or prevent reproduction in a variety of pests such as insects, rodents, weeds, and microbes.
  • Incineration
An age-old practice for waste management. However, the process of burning modern-day waste, particularly medical waste, presents us with new and extensive environmental health risks because of the makeup of the waste stream.
  • PVC & DEHP
Contained in many of the common plastic products found in health care settings.
  • Medical Pollution
In the increasingly complex environment in which health care is delivered today, nurses must be advocates for health care practices which do no harm to the public health environment.

Founded in 1908, WSNA is the professional organization representing more than 16,000 registered nurses in Washington State. WSNA effectively advocates for the improvement of health standards and availability of quality health care for all people; promotes high standards for the nursing profession; and advances the professional and economic development of nurses.
