Nurses and other health care workers are exposed to infectious diseases that may be transmitted by aerosols, including measles, chicken pox, pertussis, mumps and tuberculosis. In addition to these familiar risks, nurses are on the front lines for emerging pathogens such as pandemic flu, SARS or Ebola Virus Disease. This presentation will address current knowledge and recent research about how these diseases are spread. We will also discuss controlling exposures through planning, respiratory hygiene, airborne infection isolation rooms, the user of respirators and other personal protective equipment as well as immunization and post-exposure follow-up.
