Negotiations Update – Day 3 and 4 Recap

Management presented a complete proposal, but it fell short of meeting the needs and realities of our workforce—particularly in light of the higher cost of living on San Juan Island and standards already set at comparable facilities like St. Joe’s.

Key takeaways from management’s proposal:

Wages

  • $3.25 increase in year 1, followed by 2.5% raises in years 2 and 3 — less than St. Joe’s, despite San Juan’s higher living costs.

Shift Differential

  • Replace percentage-based shift differential with fixed-dollar premiums that don’t keep up with inflation.

Per Diem Changes

  • Require availability for open shifts only — less flexibility.
  • Reduce pay rates for per diems with primary positions at other facilities.

Discipline Process

  • More harsh discipline procedure that allows “Stacking” of unrelated discipline,  increasing risk of escalated discipline for minor and/or unrelated issues.

Paid Time Off (PTO)

  • Remove 600-hour accrual cap → replace with a cap of 1.5x nurse’s accrual rate.
  • Eliminate PTO cash-out provisions — would default to PeaceHealth (PH) policy.
  • Eliminate PTO donation provisions — would default to PeaceHealth (PH) policy.

Travel expense reimbursement

  • Eliminate travel expense provisions — again defaulting to PH policy.

PeaceHealth Family Leave

  • Eliminate PeaceHealth Family Leave

What This Means

Management is proposing significant rollbacks and changes that undermine economic stability, work-life balance, and workplace protections — a step backward from current standards and not aligned with the cost realities or community needs of San Juan Island.
