WABON Advanced Practice and Pain Management Rule Workshop

7–9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025

Background

The Washington State Board of Nursing (board) is considering amendments to WAC 246-840-010 and WAC 246-840-300 through 246-840-4990 to clarify advanced practice licensure requirements, align standards with national best practices, update prescriptive authority provisions, and address other related objectives.

This rulemaking is Phase 2 of the board’s review of chapter 246-840 WAC, conducted in accordance with the board’s five-year formal rule review process under RCW 43.70.041. The goal of this review is to clarify and update outdated language, rewrite and reformat existing rules to reflect current best practices, and restructure sections as necessary.

Upcoming Rule Workshop

The Board is hosting a public rule workshop to receive input from interested parties.

During this initial workshop, the Board will:

  • Introduce the rulemaking project
  • Provide background and historical context
  • Offer an overview of the rulemaking process
  • Pose general discussion questions to gather input from interested parties on the current WAC language:
    • What challenges or barriers have you experienced with the current language?
    • Are there terms or sections that are unclear or outdated?
    • How could these rules be more reflective of current practice?
    • Are there areas where alignment with national norms or expectations is lacking?

No draft rule language will be presented at this meeting. Instead, we welcome your feedback on the clarity, usability, and alignment of the existing rules. This workshop is part of a collaborative rule development process and is open to all interested parties.
