WSNA members help meet $50K match for nursing scholarships

This year, the WSNF trustees awarded 25 scholarships to nursing students totaling $89,000, their biggest award year yet!

This story was published in the June 2025 edition of The Washington Nurse.

YOU DID IT!  Thanks to efforts big and small by WSNA members and other generous donors, the Washington State Nurses Foundation (WSNF) met its $50,000 match challenge. The total funds raised in the match period ending April 30 was $54, 954.28 for a total of $104, 954.28.

Many thanks to our generous anonymous donor for issuing this challenge and supporting the future of nursing. In addition to various fundraising activities throughout the seven-month match period, the foundation hosted two successful fundraising events at the 2025 WSNA Convention — a raffle that raised $3,680 during the match period and a Raise the Paddle that raised $6,561.16. Congratulations to our raffle winners:

  • Nurse Blake Seattle comedy show tickets (1pair): John Gustafson
  • Nurse Blake Seattle comedy show tickets (1pair): Jacob Clark
  • Nurse Blake Spokane comedy show tickets (1pair): Nicole Klein, who generously gifted them to Erika Lee!
  • Nurse Blake Spokane comedy show tickets (1pair): Judy Huntington, who generously gifted them to Lori Bethay, who then generously gifted them to Martha Goodall!
  • Wine Cellar:  Nicole Klein
  • NurseCon at Sea cruise: Pamela Chandran
  • NurseCon at Sea cruise: Lynnette Vehrs
  • Holland America Cruise: Barb Friesen

The foundation trustees led the crowd in a Raise the Paddle event at the WSNA Gala, with Heather Stephen-Selby, MSN, RN, doing a fantastic job as emcee. While these donations were outside of the match window, every penny raised will support nursing student scholarships and the future of nurses. We could not have done it without you.

This year, the WSNF trustees awarded 25 scholarships to nursing students totaling $89,000, their biggest award year yet! A future Washington Nurse article will highlight these deserving recipients.

The awardees were chosen at the trustees’ spring meeting in March. The scholarships are paid to the school, not the student, and the funds are currently being processed to the schools.

The 2026-2027 scholarship application cycle will open in early December 2025. All ADN, BSN, and graduate students are welcome to apply! Registered nurses pursuing additional education must be WSNA members to qualify.

The Washington State Nurses Foundation is a nonprofit 501c3 organization established in 1982 and is separately incorporated from Washington State Nurses Association. Their mission is to acquire and develop funds for clinical and educational advancement of the nursing profession.
