Ruth Schubert, a spokesperson for the Washington State Nurses Association, said in an email that the union hasn’t heard of any similar incidents in which nurses are using consumer-oriented chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude to do work such as charting patients’ information.
She said the union has been focused on making sure any AI technology that enters the facility allows nurses to maintain their expertise — supplementing, rather than replacing, human nurses. The training, however, is up to each facility.
The union was able to get language in a Seattle Children’s hospital nurses contract that put boundaries around how AI should be used in a medical setting, she said.
