Good Samaritan Leadership has announced a restructure in the Inpatient Rehab Department to convert all 8 hour positions to 12 hour positions.
This will affect approximately 23 full-time and part-time nurses and 3 per diems. Currently the unit has a mix of 8's and 12's, with the majority being the 8 hour nurses.
Management states that the reason for the restructure is to "best meet scheduling needs for the unit." The nurses will be given a preference sheet to rebid into the 12 hour positions, which will be due June 30. Seniority will be the determining factor, providing skill, competence, ability and prior job performance are not considered to be overriding factors. A seniority roster will be provided. The go live date will begin on September 21, 2025.
Seniority
Your date of hire will not likely be your seniority date, unless you were hired after August 2023. Since Workday was implemented in July 2023, MultiCare could no longer compute seniority based on hours. It had to be converted to date based. The new date was based on past compensable hours which were then converted by a formula to a date. Going forward, this is your new seniority date. For those hired after August 2023, your date of hire is your seniority date.
Please refer to the WSNA contract Article 6.4 to 6.4.4 Layoff/Reallocation Procedure and Article 6.1 Seniority.
WSNA will be sending the employer a "Demand to Bargain" the changes in working conditions, meaning to bargain the effects of the change. The hope would be to only eliminate the 8 hour positions via attrition (once the 8 hour nurse leaves, the 8 hour position is dissolved). However, we expect pushback from the employer on this. While we work on this, please still fill out your rebid preference sheets. You may also browse the job postings for other MultiCare 8 hour positions which you might like to apply for if you are unable to switch to 12s.
If you are one of the affected nurses and do not feel you can make the change to a 12 hour position, please contact your WSNA Nurse Representative Janet at jstewart@wsna.org. or call/text 206-735-6484. In order to fight this, we need to know who and how many nurses are struggling with this change.
