Day 9 Negotiations Update – It’s Time to Show Management They Need to Do Better

PIMC Day 9

Our team worked late into the night trying to negotiate a contract we could proudly recommend to you. Despite our best efforts, PeaceHealth continues to demand takeaways that are unacceptable. Here's where things stand:

PeaceHealth’s Unfair Demands

Cutting Our PTO Cap
PeaceHealth wants to reduce our PTO cap from 600 hours to just 1.5 times a nurse's annual accrual.

  • St. Joe’s still has a 600-hour cap and EIB.
Yet, PeaceHealth insists PIMC nurses must give this up to get a deal.

Changing Shift Differential Rules

  • They want to base shift differential on the “majority of the shift” instead of actual hours worked.
    • This would cut day shift nurses’ 11% differential for their last 4 hours.
    • St. Joe’s contract doesn’t have this rule.
PeaceHealth continues to push this change anyway.

Management is trying to force changes that take away provisions of our contract to get wage increases PIMC nurses deserve.

It’s Time to Stand Together

PeaceHealth needs to see that PIMC nurses won’t accept takeaways. We are ready to stand strong and united for a fair contract.

We are currently scheduled to resume mediation with Management on Thursday, July 10.  With the contract expiring on June 30, we know nurses will have questions about what your rights and protections are while we continue negotiating for a new contract. Please know this: Management is obligated to “maintain the status quo” (i.e. keep wages and working conditions the same as they are now) while we continue negotiating. We will continue to share updates, and appreciate everyone’s solidarity as we continue to reject takeaways and bargain a fair contract.

Informational Picket: Coming Soon!

The support has been incredible—nearly every nurse signed the pledge to join the informational picket! If you’re wondering what an informational picket is, check out our FAQ.

Stay tuned for exact time and location details!

Join Us in the 4th of July Parade!

Let’s celebrate our strength and unity on Independence Day!

This year’s Friday Harbor 4th of July Parade theme is “Hometown Heroes”—and who deserves that recognition more than the nurses of San Juan Island?

  • All nurses—hospital, clinic, school, retired, and home health—are welcome!
  • Wear your WSNA T-shirt, or anything blue, bring your spirit, and walk with pride as one united group.
  • Our WSNA Local Unit Officers are collecting pledges from nurses who want to join.

Let’s show our island—and PeaceHealth—how much heart and strength our nurses have!

Contact a bargaining team member and sign the pledge to join us in the Parade!

Together, we can fight for the fair wages, security, and respect we and our patients deserve.

Resources and tools

Document unsafe conditions

If you find yourself in a situation that you believe creates unsafe conditions for patients or for you, you should complete a Staffing Complaint / ADO Form as soon as possible.

By completing the form, you will help make the problem known to management, creating an opportunity for the problem to be addressed. Additionally, you will be documenting the facts, which may be helpful to you later if there is a negative outcome.

WSNA also uses your ADO forms to track the problems occurring in your facility. When you and your coworkers take the important step of filling out an ADO form, you are helping to identify whether there is a pattern of unsafe conditions for you or your patients at your facilities. This information is used by your conference committee, staffing committee, and WSNA labor staff to improve your working conditions.

Representation rights

As a union member, you have the right to have a representative present in any meetings with management that could potentially lead to disciplinary action against you.

If called into a meeting with management, read the following to management when the meeting begins:

If this discussion could in any way lead to my being disciplined or terminated, I respectfully request that my union representative be present at this meeting. Without representation present, I choose not to participate in this discussion.

Find out more about this crucial right and how to exercise it to ensure your fair treatment and protection.
