Update February 27, 2028

Hello Island Nurses,

This update is brief, but that does not mean there isn’t significant activity underway. WSNA is currently interviewing for a new Executive Director. Multiple grievances are in process, and preparation for bargaining is ongoing. If you are interested in participating in any of these processes or have questions, please reach out. In the meantime, below is the news you can use.

Hospital Staffing Committee (HSC) Update

There was meaningful progress at the HSC meeting earlier this month. Based on ADOs filed by nurses, we were able to demonstrate a pattern of missed breaks. Leadership acknowledged the trend and agreed to have managers work with their local units to develop systems to ensure nurses are able to take their breaks.

This is a clear example of frontline reporting driving measurable change. Data trending matters.

What this means for you:

  • Know your staffing plan. It should be posted on your unit in a public location. If you cannot locate it, please email an officer or me directly.
  • The plans should be available online through the Department of Health here. DOH has not yet updated the website, but that is expected to be updated soon.
  • Any break coverage system must never drop staffing below the minimum required in your unit plan. If staffing falls below minimum—even briefly—that is a violation for the shift.
  • Continue filing ADOs when appropriate. Ongoing tracking will be essential to verify whether these solutions are effective.

Questions are welcome.

Critical Access Hospital Discussion

Island Hospital is evaluating conversion to Critical Access Hospital status. Attend update meetings and stay informed. If you have concerns or questions about how this may impact nursing practice, staffing, or patient care, communicate them to your officers or nurse representative.

Negotiations

The negotiations survey remains live.

Please complete the survey if you have not already.

This survey guides the bargaining team’s priorities. It is your first and most direct opportunity to influence negotiations.

For questions or concerns, contact your officers or your Nurse Representative at:

Have a good weekend.
