As WSNA Executive Director David Keepnews, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, prepares to retire this August, the Board of Directors, elected by the membership, is committed to a transparent and thorough transition. To provide clarification, here is an overview of the process to select our next Executive Director.

Role of the Executive Director

Per the WSNA Bylaws, the Executive Director is the organization's lead administrator. Appointed by and accountable to the Board of Directors, this individual:

  • Oversees WSNA staff and daily operations.
  • Implements policies set by the Board and the Labor Executive Council (LEC).
  • Acts as a primary liaison with partners like the ANA, AFT, and Washington State Labor Council.

The search process

Selecting the Executive Director is a core fiduciary duty of the 11-member Board. To manage this, the Board approved a search process, including appointment of an 8-member Search Committee—comprising officers and representatives from the Board and LEC—to vet applicants.

To protect both the candidates and the integrity of the search, all committee and Board members have committed to strict confidentiality throughout the process.

Current status and next steps

The position was advertised nationally, and we received well over 100 applicants. The Search Committee has identified three final candidates to move through the final phase of the process adopted by our Board.

  • Final Interviews: The full Board will interview these finalists on February 20.
  • Staff Input: WSNA staff will also provide feedback to ensure the new leader is well-equipped to manage day-to-day operations.
  • Final Selection: The Board will make the final hiring decision and negotiate employment terms.

We know people are excited and curious. Once the process is finalized, we look forward to introducing the new Executive Director to our membership and the public.
