June: Staffing and nurse practice committee update by Simon Morton
Nurse Practice Committee:
- October will be foley protocol (non ICU) go live with epic update.
- Vertical flow in ED will start to get implemented.
- Town hall tentatively scheduled for November will include recap of year in nursing, and a potential guest speaker about shared governance.
Staffing committee:
Not enough nurses to have a quorum, so we could not resolve any ADOs.
Finance presentation occurred. As of April:
- Reduced oncology/surgery revenue caused us to miss our profit margin goal, but still positive by roughly 6 million after expenses.
- Surgeries were down 10.5% driven by provider staffing issues
- Payer mix higher Medicare
- Operating margin still positive 4.1%
- Higher patient volumes, mix has been less acute/less revenue
- Continue to have an A rating for bond from moody and fitch
- Balance sheet overall is strong
Still looking for staffing committee reps and alternates as well as NPC members.
Reach out for any interest!
Conference Committee
June:
If you have a general concern or unit specific concern, please bring to an Officer, Unit Rep or Laurie Robinson so that we are able to add to the agenda.
- SOU and extra X Shifts. It has been found that some nurses were collecting more. This was discovered and the error was corrected.
- Mandatory Call: When MC 10-12 shift- never distinguished. With holiday, it is 24 hrs. There is interest in changing practice from date to hours of MC. Liz is asking for more information.
- Central OR RNs were asked to volunteer or be assigned to float to Mares. This occurred on a single day. WSNA was notified and this ceased. Nurses may volunteer to float but not required to float. Additionally, we brought up that nurses who choose to float must be appropriately oriented to meet safe staffing requirements.
- Required use of PTO when nurse agrees to work on a scheduled PTO day: Nurse wants the ability to save PTO hours, and the employer is requiring the nurse to use the hours. There is a signed MOU that allows for this and it does not appear to have been addressed during bargaining over several contract cycles. The employer states that this is unfair to employees who had asked for PTO and denied.
- Approval of OT for short staffing: This came up as there was an ADO written from the ED where several nurses had agreed to stay extra to alleviate the short staffing and were denied by the director. This is entirely leadership’s responsibility, and it is at the director level.
- Night shift recruitment and retention: Per the CBA we are to discuss potentials. WSNA proposes the ability for night shift to combine meal and rest breaks as an opportunity. HR looking at this ability. Cites current inability with API. Another idea a potential for job shares for the charge nurse role as they have been open for some time. Kelly is open to a conversation but does not know if she would post as a job share.
- Seniority: The new MOU adding Mares addressed seniority being throughout the campuses. WSNA did not see seniority being adjusted when nurses reached out detailing their work example at Central then moved to Mares. Leadership does not agree and this will be filed as a grievance.
- Posting WSNA signage: Leadership brought forth a concern that WSNA signage (Wenatchee Loves Nurses) was found in unapproved areas. WSNA signage is allowed in breakrooms bulletin boards only. If you see signage elsewhere, please remove it.
- IP Shift Floating: Problem identified when there is a need to float and it the need is not the IP nurse’s identified float designation. The nurse could be LC, but if no need does leadership move to the next float? We are reviewing.
Grievances:
Pool nurses have self-scheduled for open shifts and availability only to be denied BU work to meet travel nurses FTEs.
This grievance originated out of the ED as the employer was scheduling the travel nurses FTE. This is taking away bargaining unit work and violates the Incentive Bonus Program. One of our Officers, Brittney Lamb has proposed a potential for Pool nurses to be able to schedule themselves within a 12-week period, essentially an internal travel position. We are looking at this as a potential trial first and if found successful we would write an MOU and the bargaining unit would vote on this.
Bargaining Unit Meetings:
To provide a predictable schedule for the members of the bargaining unit, we will be offering a monthly meeting. This will be the 3rd Wednesday each month and we will alternate in-person and virtual. This will provide members with the opportunity to provide information regarding safety, education, grievances and contract issues. Members are encouraged to ask questions and share concerns as well as to stay involved.
June 17, 2026, we met virtually. Our next meeting will be in-person on July 15, 2026, 6p-8p for an ICE CREAM SOCIAL at the Pavillion. Families are welcome!
