Nurse Practice Committee

May:

Kelly Allen will bring up to nurse professional development/clinical ladder on editing credit to have points for each eligible project under UBC instead of just one and done (definitely not a bribe). As a reminder, completing enough nurse professional development program activities can get you up to $4000 bonus. See the pulse page for further details.

Leapfrog (a hospital grading company) graded Confluence as a “C” rating. Some of the categories which dragged the score down are nurse related. The CH team working on those improvements will come to next meeting to see how NPC can assist.

I and members from management will be meeting via Teams with a virtual nurse vendor on Friday. If there is interest to listen in/ask questions, let me know and we should be able to send an invite.

For an update on UBC (unit based council) integration Sara Bergenholtz from ED UBC showed the new charter they’ve submitted and talked about ideas to increase involvement.

Benefits

May:

A review of the costs of different plans and cost of insurance. No voting  occurred nor other information.

Hospital Staffing Committee

May:

Staffing committee update:

A slightly improved staffing plan for SOU that will match the MOU grid is being voted on today.

We discussed an ADO about mother baby/labor and delivery today. In brief, a nurse was assigned 3 couplets and a 28-week pregnant mother. Already out of staffing plan, but the 28-week patient ended up going into labor and requiring emergent C-section, which further compounded issues. There has been a recent influx of babies being born this month, and with an already strained staffing situation, the environment is often unsafe. Management has at times been physically on the floor helping as well. They have also hired 3 new travelers. 5 new grads/hires are going through the internship process.

On a semi-related note, management is putting together a group to find out what has been going on financially in that department. Apparently, the number of births is not lining up well with the cost compared to the standards which is what that group is investigating. The ED ADOs were not addressed this meeting as there was no ED rep in attendance.

Conference Committee

May:

  • IP selection: We were informed that OR was only allowing the most senior nurse to participate in IP. This should be first come, first serve. Leadership will be notifying nurses that they will need to come in to sign up for IP.
  • PEDs/MBU Pre-Scheduled Weekends: Leadership reports that night shift is every other weekend and day shift is every 3rd weekend. They have posted for a position on nights and when it is filled, nights will be every 3rd weekend.
  • Update on Home Health Hospice: The employer has requested to open the LOU (Appendix B) to bargain changes. Our next meeting is June 11  and have been working on this since March.

If you have a general concern or unit specific concern, please bring to an Officer, Unit Rep or Laurie Robinson so that we are able to add to the agenda.

Grievances

Pool nurses have self-scheduled for open shifts and availability only to be denied BU work to meet travel

nurses FTEs.

This grievance originated out of the ED as the employer was scheduling the travel nurses FTE. This is taking away bargaining unit work and violates the Incentive Bonus Program. One of our Officers, Brittney Lamb has proposed a potential for Pool nurses to be able to schedule themselves within a 12-week period, essentially an internal travel position. We are looking forward to meeting with the employer to discuss settling this grievance and getting Pool nurses’ work!

Bargaining Unit Meetings

To provide a predictable schedule for the members of the bargaining unit, we will be offering a monthly meeting. This will provide members with the opportunity to ask questions and share concerns as well as to stay involved. This meeting will be on June 17 6-8 pm VIRTUAL.
