Contract Bargaining Day 1
Posted Nov 21, 2025
Our WSNA nurse bargaining team met with management for day one of contract negotiations. Our team worked diligently to pass proposals across multiple articles of the contract including-
Workplace Violence
Our Union passed a comprehensive proposal on workplace violence prevention. Some of our proposals include
- Management implementing a weapons detection system at all visitor entrances
- Adding the WSNA Nurse Representative as a non-voting member at monthly meetings
- Relieving committee nurses to attend committee meetings
- Guaranteeing a written response within 60 days of nurses experiencing workplace violence
- Adding language to allow nurses to be relieved of duty on employer paid time should they request after experiencing workplace violence
- Providing at least one security officer at each public entrance
Voluntary PAC donation
Our union proposed language that would allow our nurses to enroll in voluntary donation to our political action committee and have those funds be directly deducted from their paycheck.
Safe Staffing Language
An overwhelming number of nurses indicated on the bargaining survey that they demand better staffing and comprehensive break relief. Some of our proposals include
- A NEW article for dedicated break nurses to provide nurses break relief.
- Enhancing our meal and rest break article language to come current with changes in our law.
- NEW language about waivers for meal and rest periods
- A NEW article to capture the self-scheduling process currently utilized across the hospital.
- NEW language that gives all nurses who work an unscheduled shift with less than 24 hours’ notice be paid at time and a half.
Management also gave our union proposals to consider including changes to definitions in Article 4 and a counter on Article 5. Follow along and read about these articles and others in our current contract bargaining agreement on our webpage.
Where is our current contract?
Search WSNA SHMC anytime to find it on our main page. This is where our email updates will be posted as well. Read current and past updates on this page.

Our bargaining committee is continuing to finalize proposals that are economic and non-economic. One area that we lack information in is surrounding low census. The current low census system does not specify that low census is based by unit but by first come first serve and then rotate equitably. Our contract also has current language that can be grieved for keeping bumping and floating to a minimum. If you have any conflicts, complaints, or meaningful solutions to improving our low census language, please email your WSNA Nurse Representative at amachorro@wsna.org. Our bargaining team needs to have sufficient feedback when evaluating whether we make a change to current language.
