Detailed information about each of these volunteer opportunities appears below the form.

I'm interesting in serving:
What part about being a Local Unit Liaison interests you the most?

  • Serve as Local Unit Liaison for the nurses on my unit (Volunteer)
Local Unit Liaisons (previously called Local Unit Reps) are the eyes and ears of the unit and act as a link between local unit officers and nurses on the floor. Their main role is to provide a bridge of communication from the WSNA Nurse Representative and local unit officers and the staff nurses, working on a task-orientated basis.
  • Serve as a WSNA SHMC Delegate to the Spokane Labor Council (Volunteer)
The SLC Delegate is in charge of attending Labor Council meetings, which typically occur on the last Tuesday of the month from 7-9pm, and networks with other union leaders. The delegate is the voice for the SHMC nurses to the Labor Council, and the work involves networking to maintain relationships for any union-related event in which solidarity is needed. WSNA’s regional central labor council delegates are critical to ensuring that local units are connected to their local and regional labor communities.
  • Serve on the Nurse Practice Committee the next time there is an opening
(Nurse Practice Committee, found in Article 14.1 of the WSNA contract)
The Nurse Practice Committee meets at least six times per year, on paid time, with management to discuss and improve nursing practices and develop specific objectives.
  • Serve on the Workplace Violence Committee the next time there is an opening
(Article 19 – Workplace Safety speaks to the Workplace Violence Committee)
The Workplace Violence Committee is a balanced team of nurses and management working to address violent and disruptive behaviors from patients, visitors and others. The Committee meets once a month and on paid time.
  • Serve on the Safety Committee the next time there is an opening
Safety Committee (Found in Article 14.3 of the WSNA contract)
The Safety Committee meets with management at determined times to discuss safety and security issues. Meetings typically occur biannually but can be more or less frequent. Members of this committee meet at the same time, and in conjunction with, the Workplace Violence Committee.
  • Serve on the Negotiation Team
The Negotiating Team is a body of dynamic nursing leaders who have been given the authority to make critical decisions in the best interest of the nurses though collective bargaining. Alongside the officers, members of the Negotiating Team work to address issues affecting units at Providence Sacred Heart through discussions with management, and help carry out tasks to engage and energize the unit during campaigns. Such tasks may include, but are not limited to: turnout for an event, gathering nurses to sign a petition, or helping to organize a rally or informational picket.

For more information on any of these roles, contact Jaclyn Smedley RN, BSN, WSNA Nurse Representative.
