On Thursday, July 17, nurses from UWMC Northwest and Montlake met virtually with UW President’s Office representatives—Chief of Staff Margaret Shepherd and AVP of Labor Relations Banks Evans—after the outgoing President was unavailable.

We delivered a clear, urgent message: nurses need support now—and management’s current offer misses the mark.

We followed up on our testimony at the Board of Regents meeting and spoke directly about the ongoing challenges we face:

• We’re 7% behind other area hospitals on wages, and the gap keeps growing—especially after Swedish’s recent agreement.
• Nurses are buddy breaking, which can leave a single nurse covering an unsustainable and exhausting number of patients.
• Losing 28/160 flexible scheduling would make it even harder to recruit and retain nurses—and we can’t afford to lose flexibility that supports work-life balance

We felt heard—but listening isn’t enough. Management must act. What they’ve proposed is not a contract we can recommend.
