UWMC Montlake Bargaining Update #10

myCurrentUpdate.tableOfContents =

On Tuesday June 17, your WSNA negotiation team met with UWMC leadership for our 10th session.

More than 50 nurses took time to stop by at 0800, hoping to share with the employer how impactful the proposed end of 28/160 (flexible scheduling practice at UW Montlake for over 30 years) and how offensive the initial wage offer of 2% year one and 1% year two are. Unfortunately, we got last-minute confirmation that management decided to come at a different time. We made use of the time to come together, build solidarity, and gather messages from nurses on posters that we hung in the bargaining room for management to read while negotiating (here are a few):

  • "Patients aren't first if nurses are last!"
  • "I can't afford to live here."
  • "Be the manager of choice."
  • "28/160 is why I work here."

Thank you to everyone who signed a petition! Negotiation team members from Montlake and Northwest presented the petition to CNO Kellie Garth Green during negotiations. Thank you to everyone who has sent emails and written letters. Encourage your colleagues to do the same if they have not already! Another Thank you to everyone who took the time to come observe and share that removing 28/160 scheduling and uncompetitive wages would force nurses to consider other employment. It was really impactful to have so many Nurses show up, and the heartfelt stories about the personal impacts of flexible scheduling were moving - at least for those of us on the WSNA bargaining team. It is an honor and humbling to work with and represent you all.

Despite our efforts to date, and how much the employer says they understand, the employer will not change their position on the removal of 28/160.

We continued the work of negotiating other outstanding contract language - trading counter proposals and seeking understanding. We were largely met with rejection for most union proposals. The employer has stated in no uncertain terms that we are all so special they could never possibly recognize any of us with a new premium again - even a revenue generating service like dialysis we all know is contracted out at every other hospital (including our sister NW). We maintained that we deserve more than platitudes for the specialized work we do, we deserve to be paid.

We will continue to bargain for a fair contract as long as it takes! The current contract expires on July 1, 2025 and will stand until July 1, 2026 while we continue dialogue with the employer.

Our next session is June 27. You can do three things between now and then to keep the pressure on management.

1. Email your UWMC leadership team if you have not yet

· Take one minute to email your UWMC RN leadership today... and tell them their proposal to remove the 28-day flexible scheduling option is unacceptable!

· Click the link below see the form letter that we are asking you send to CNO Kellie Garth Green, Assistant Administrator Amy Haverland and Vice President of HR Mindy Kornberg · Their emails are: kgarth@uw.edu, havrilla@uw.edu, mindyk@uw.edu

2. Sign up to come observe bargaining in action!

Observers need to sign up here so we can inform security. If you plan on observing, please make sure to read through this document so you know what to expect. Please text our WSNA organizer at 206-406-7203 if you have any questions about observing.

3. Share the bargaining updates

We have one session scheduled until your contract expires. It is crucial to read the email updates and share them on your unit with your co-workers. You can find our socials here. Don’t get WSNA email updates? Follow this guide to whitelist newsletter@wsna.org.
