Grievance Filed: Nurse Practice and Medications

WSNA filed a grievance due to concerns being expressed about the Safety of Medication administration and treatments to the residents when the RN is assigned to the Cart, as well as Supervisory duties of taking the call book and call phone. This is an unsafe distraction to proper and safe patient care. Often times nurses are forced into mandatory overtime to get all these tasks accomplished.

Please share your stories and experiences with WSNA Nurse Representative Janet Stewart to help show evidence that this is a REAL concern. You may contact her at jstewart@wsna.org

The grievance meeting is scheduled for Wednesday October 29 from 10 - 11 am in the Human Resources Conference Room. You are welcome to attend; but please RSVP to Janet for planning purposes.  Janet will present the grievance argument; but nurses are welcome to share their experiences. The grievance will be heard by Administrator Matt Lysobey and HR Consultant Caitlin Stork.

Staffing Complaint Forms - ADOs (Assignment Despite Objection)

Did you know you can use an online ADO form to document any unsafe working condition. That includes: missed breaks, equipment malfunction, inadequate nurse to patient ratios for patient acuity, inadequate support staff, workplace violence... and more! Click on this link to document your situation.

Report your staffing concerns in real time to management to give them an opportunity to correct the situation; then fill out the ADO to keep your union informed of the issues.

Your Representational Rights. What should you do when your manager asks to meet with you?

If your manager approaches you to meet with you, you have the right to ask if the meeting is "Investigatory" and if it may lead to discipline.  State, "If this discussion could in any way lead to my discipline or termination, I request a Union Representative be present. Unless I have this representation, I respectfully choose not to participate in this discussion."

Do not be afraid or intimidated to request union representation. It is your Weingarten or Representational Rights per the National Labor Relations Act.

You should then reach out to one of your WSNA officers or call the WSNA Nurse Representative to arrange a meeting date/time.

You may ask your manager what the meeting is about and they are required to give you the General Topic of the meeting.

If any nurse receives disciplinary action, do not hesitate to notify your WSNA nurse representative immediately to discuss the possibility of filing a grievance. Your timeline is 21 days, so don't delay.
