Good Samaritan Leadership has announced Reallocations in the Inpatient Rehab Department, converting all 8 hour positions to 12 hour positions. WSNA is here to support these nurses the best way we are able.
On Wednesday June 18, the day in which the employer informed nurses of this change, WSNA issued a Cease and Desist and a Demand to Bargain the changes in working conditions; meaning bargain the effects of the change.
We had an Impact Bargaining session on Thursday, June 26. These are items which were discussed:
- Offering more FTEs in certain groupings if there's a lot of competition for those slots. For example offering more that 4 x 0.6 FTE nocs if more than 4 nurses desire it. Basically offer a bucket of FTEs and allow nurses to choose the FTE which works best for them. Then make adjustments if it comes over or under.
- Offer 8 hour break nurse positions for nurses not able to transition to 12 hours.
- Offer 8 hour Flex/Resource nurse positions, as the contract calls for an around-the-clock Flex nurse under MOU: Additional Resources.
- Keep one POD as an 8 hour POD.
- Do not force RNs to change to 12 hours; but eliminate 8 hour shifts via attrition (as nurses eventually vacate the 8 hour positions).
- Don't displace the current 12 hour shift nurses out of their shift and FTE who may get outbid due to low seniority.
- If the rebid causes nurses to drop FTE below what their sign-on bonus requires; there should be no financial repercussions; nor should nurses be forced to lose their FT benefits over this rebid.
- We discussed workload imbalances and how this will affect nurses. Debbie Baxtrom assures us that shared leadership will be ironing out the issues of workload balance. This will be your opportunity to have a voice and participate in the process.
- Sign on bonus or financial incentive for nurses who convert from 8's to 12's.
Thank you for offering your thoughts, feelings and suggestions. Management has listened and will get back to us with their response.
WSNA is filing a grievance this week against the employer for forcing this change which should be optional and agreed upon by each individual nurse's mutual agreement with the employer. (Addendum 2: 12 Hour Shift Schedule and 7.3 Innovative Work Schedules). These articles were brought up at Impact Bargaining; and management doesn't agree that there's a contract violation. The grievance process can be a slow process; so please DO complete your bidding sheets so you are not left out. The Rebid Shift Assignments/Preference Sheet Review will be on Tuesday July 1st. The employer has invited the WSNA Nurse Rep to attend that meeting.
If you are one of the affected nurses and do not feel that you can make the change to 12-hour shifts, please contact your nurse Representative Janet Stewart. Email - JStewart@wsna.org. Call/Text (206) 735-6484.
In order to fight this, we need to know who and how many nurses are struggling with this change.
See the board in the Rehab breakroom or the WSNA board in the Education Room for open shifts at Good Sam and open 8 hour shifts throughout Multicare.
If you'd like the Excel sheet emailed to you, please let us know.
ADOs - Assignment Despite Objection (Staffing Complaint Forms)
If you find yourself in a situation that you believe creates unsafe conditions for patients or for you, complete the Staffing Complaint/ADO form as soon as possible.
Additionally, use this form to let us know when you have concerns about inadequate break coverage or reliance on break buddies for meals and rest breaks.
Do you have equipment problems? Workplace Violence? We'd like to hear about those too?
Seeking Union Leaders
We are looking for union leadership: Unit Representatives, Grievance Officers, New Hire Representatives. Contact us if you'd like more information about these roles. Training will be provided. More unit rep trainings to be announced.
Thank you Raeli
