The Executive Committee of the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA) Board of Directors has issued the following statement following the shooting at Donald Trump’s campaign rally on July 13:

WSNA takes a stand against political violence in any circumstance. We condemn the attack on former president Donald Trump’s campaign rally, and we extend our sympathies to the candidate, the family of the person killed at the rally, those who were injured, and all those traumatized by this event.

The infiltration of violent rhetoric and acts into areas of public discourse must end.  Nurses are not naive to this trend; we have experienced it with regard to issues of public health and healthcare. We care for all patients regardless of their background or political identity and will continue to do so. While we are not afraid to speak up for what is right and take a stand on issues that affect our profession, our patients, and our communities, it is essential that we do so in an environment that is free from intimidation or physical harm. The right to be free from acts or threats of violence applies also to political candidates, public health officials, educators, election officials, and to every citizen and resident.

The recent events are evidence of an ongoing and escalating problem of political incivility in the United States. From the horrific events on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol to the violent acts against leaders of both political parties, this moment reminds us that we all need to reflect on how we interact and disagree with one another.

WSNA calls on all nurses to stand up for civility and non-violent discourse.
