The production team that created powerful documentaries and books about nursing, including The American Nurse, created a YouTube channel to share content with the public.

Carolyn Jones Productions has created many documentaries involving nursing—The American Nurse, Defining Hope, In Case of Emergency, and American Delivery— with two more in production—The Global Nurse, The Floating Hospital Story.

The projects, supported by the American Nurses Foundation, have won numerous awards and widespread media coverage, including in The New York Times and USA Today.

The YouTube channel includes videos from nurse interviews, outtakes, and bonus features.

The full-length documentaries will not be posted on YouTube since they have a distribution company who manages the films. But many excerpts from the films as well as thoughtful edited interviews while making the films will all be there.

The films Defining Hope and American Delivery are available in their 60-minute form at pbs.org for free. And there are links below on how to access the full-length versions of these films and their other documentaries.

  • The American Nurse on Amazon
The documentary focuses on raising the volume of nurses' collective voice in the United States.
  • Defining Hope on PBS (60-minute version)
  • Defining Hope on Amazon (long version)
The documentary follows patients with life-threatening illness and the nurses who guide them as they make choices about how they want to live. It is optimistic and reminds us that we have choices in how we die.
  • In Case of Emergency on Amazon
The documentary paints a startling picture of our ERs stretched to the breaking point and exposes the extent of our nation’s broken safety net amid many public health crises. Emergency Room nurses tackle patients’ physical and emotional needs before sending them back through the healthcare system’s revolving door.
  • American Delivery on PBS (short version)
  • American Delivery on Amazon (long version)
The documentary looks at the crisis of maternal mortality in the United States, where more women die in childbirth than any other wealthy nation. The film offers glimmers of hope—women finding their voice and autonomy; nurses listening to women and offering birth choices; and hospital leaders welcoming the community as the patient. The film premiered on PBS.org May 1.

New projects include the following:

The Global Nurse: Production is underway for a documentary from the perspectives of three nurse pioneers who have migrated to the United States from the Philippines, Ghana, and India. The film tells the complex story of what it means to devote one’s life to helping others, and what gets sacrificed and left behind when nurses choose the life-altering path of migrating to follow their professional dreams.

Harbor of Hope: The Floating Hospital Story: The team is in the early development stage of a documentary, intended for PBS, about The Floating Hospital, a 160-year-old New York City institution that has sailed through epidemics, wars, and waves of urban change. The film is about the core of who we are as a society. In an era of escalating political tension and healthcare uncertainty, are we willing to leave the most vulnerable behind?
