Break Relief

All our units are supposed to be offering 4-hour break relief shifts. We have been hearing that this is not happening on all units or that it’s difficult to sign up for them. We need to know when this is occurring, so please reach out to your local unit officer or nurse representative.

Staffing Concerns; Break Coverage

If you have staffing concerns, tell us about it on the electronic Assignment Despite Objection (ADO) Staffing Concern form. We discuss these concerns at the Hospital Staffing Committee meeting and work to find resolutions for the problems. Staffing should follow the approved matrices around the clock, not just at the beginning of the shift. Be sure to indicate the census, expected staff, and actual staff so we can see if the hospital is in compliance.

Be sure to record and attest to missed meal and rest breaks in the time and attendance system. This is important to provide accurate data for us to know if the facility is providing adequate break relief. Report missed meal and rest breaks on the ADOs. Buddy breaks have not been agreed to because they double a nurse's assignment, thus putting the staffing matrix out of compliance.

Negotiation Survey

We are gearing up for another round of contract negotiations; we want to get as many people to fill out the survey as possible. This is how we bring your concerns up to UW leadership.
