Have you been denied Preceptor Pay?

Based on the contract language below, has your manager violated the contract by denying you the $2/hour preceptor pay?

If yes, please email Nurse Representative Janet Stewart JStewart@wsna.org detailing your situation (Include your name, unit, approximate dates denied, and why you should have qualified for preceptor pay). WSNA needs to know so we can make sure the contract is being followed appropriately.

4.8 Preceptor. A preceptor is an experienced nurse who has worked independently for at least one (1) year· in the applicable specialty area and is proficient in clinical teaching who is specifically responsible for planning, organizing and evaluating the new skill development of a nurse:

a. A resident RN or Fellow employed by the Hospital;

b. A senior elective RN student;

c. A new RN hired at the Hospital into clinical areas in which the RN has no previous experience and/or Fellows;

d. An RN cross-training into a new clinical area and/or Fellows;

e. An RN who has completed their residency but needs additional training time;

f. An RN needing additional and/or necessary specific skill development as approved and directed by management;

g. Any RN new to the Hospital, including travelers, who is not assigned a patient assignment or who is not independently caring for a patient.

Preferably, all Preceptors will have completed the preceptor training program prior to precepting. Inherent in the Preceptor role is the responsibility for specific, criteria-based and goal directed education for a specific period. A Preceptor shall work on a one-on-one basis and in close proximity to the preceptee. It is the intent that the Preceptee's schedule shall be incorporated into the regular schedule of the Preceptor to the extent possible, unless training needs are such that variation provides a fuller training experience. Preceptor responsibilities will be considered when making patient care assignments. Nursing management will determine the need for preceptor assignments.

Preceptor assignments will be rotated equitably. Trained preceptors will first be offered preceptor assignments. If no trained preceptor accepts the assignment, other bargaining unit RNs will be assigned the preceptor assignment prior to non-bargaining unit RNs. However, management will have the right to assign a non-bargaining unit RN as a preceptor only after all bargaining unit RNs (who have worked independently for at least one (1) year in the applicable specialty area) on the unit have been offered the assignment.

4.8.1 It is understood that staff nurses in the ordinary course of their responsibilities will be expected to participate in the general orientation process of new nurses without receiving preceptor pay. "General orientation" includes the providing of informational assistance, support and guidance to new nurses on the unit who are independently caring for patients
